Community Notice – DPIRD Ground Control Operations
The Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) will be undertaking community ground control operations involving the use of firearms commencing this afternoon, Monday 15 December, and continuing tomorrow morning, Tuesday 16 December.
Purpose of the operation
Rainbow lorikeets have been reported in and around the Narembeen townsite over the past 24 months. In this location, rainbow lorikeets are classified as a C1 prohibited species. Current observations indicate a permanent population may be establishing and breeding.
With several street trees currently flowering within the townsite, conditions are favourable for targeted control, as the birds are feeding on flowering trees.
Location of activities
While many sightings have occurred within residential areas, control activities may take place in nearby parks and rural locations. Areas of potential high risk will be avoided.
Safety measures
DPIRD has advised that the operation will be conducted with strict safety protocols, including:
- Shooting undertaken discreetly and only when safe
- Operations will cease immediately if any member of the public is present
- Shots taken only with a suitable backstop behind the target
- Birds targeted only when in clear view
- A trained observer working alongside the shooter to ensure no pedestrians or vehicles are in the area
- Shots taken only at a minimum angle of 45 degrees, or directed away from surrounding residences on the outskirts of town
The Shire of Narembeen was notified of this operation early this afternoon. We thank the community for their understanding and cooperation while this necessary biosecurity activity is undertaken.
