SOCK Week

About us

SOCK Week (Save Our Country Kids) is a regional road safety campaign which addresses the unique road risks faced by country communities. Launched in 2017 the initiative aims to reduce fatalities through targeted awareness, education, and prevention strategies. By highlighting dangers such as long travel distances, high-speed roads, wildlife crossings, and limited emergency response access, SOCK Week empowers communities to adopt safer driving habits, make informed choices, and ultimately help to minimise the risk of serious crashes in regional areas.

History

The SOCK Week initiative, founded in Narembeen, was born from the heartbreaking loss of five young lives in Narembeen road crashes in 2016. These tragedies united the community with a powerful purpose: to raise awareness, honour those who have been lost, and prevent future road trauma. Driven by a commitment to protect young lives, the campaign targets high-risk behaviours like speeding, drink driving, fatigue, and distractions. SOCK Week empowers regional communities to take ownership of road safety and transform grief into action, creating a lasting legacy of awareness, education, and prevention across country WA.

Looking to the Future

Since 2017, SOCK has continued to grow significantly, now reaching over 23 regional towns across WA, with plans to expand to 40 by 2026. Its success is measured through community participation in school programs, emergency service sessions, and memorial events, demonstrating strong local engagement and commitment to safer driving. Endorsed by the Road Safety Commission, SOCK Week’s growth and continued partnerships reflect its increasing impact and recognition as a vital initiative in reducing road trauma in regional areas.
